Interacting with young people we support through an interest you have in common.

Befrienders are Virtual Volunteers who connect and interact with the young people we support through a skill interest or hobby that they have in common.

Befrienders provide support in a casual way that gives young people a sense of inclusion, routine, and engagement. Basic social elements that young people often deny themselves when experiencing mental health challenges.

Whether you have an artistic talent that you want to share or have industry experience that young people might find helpful, it is all about finding what our young people are looking for.

The Befriending Programme was born from the work of our Virtual Volunteers during lockdown, so all Befriending sessions will be virtual. A contract detailing the logistics of the session will be drawn up between you and your supervisor, and online training is provided.

Organisation aims and objectives

One Step Borders supports young people in the Scottish Borders, with their mental health and emotional wellbeing. We do this by: Offering free 1:1 support with the individual. Raising awareness and spreading knowledge about mental health. Supporting families with a young person experiencing difficulties with their mental health and/ or emotional well being.

Each contract is drawn up on a case by case basis, so availability, duration and session details will be determined as and when.

Restrictions

Experience required: This programme is designed to accommodate everyone, so the criteria is considerably basic! All you need to be is willing to help and a skill, hobby or interest to offer. If you want to help young people, experiencing mental health challenges, in a simple, rewarding way, Befriending is for you!
Travel details: Scottish Borders. This is home based at the moment.

Expenses details: If Befrienders need to buy any type of equipment, One Step will cover those expenses. Details on how to claim those expenses will be covered and mentioned in the contract.

A dedicated venue will be provided for ships' crews to visit and access free soft/hot drinks, wi-fi, and interact with other crew members. This facility will be available in a central location from 10:00 - 20:00hrs each day from Tuesday 25th July - Saturday 29th July (closing at 13:00 on Saturday). Liaison staff will be required to assist crew members with any enquiries and to supervise the area.

Community Support Volunteers support people who have had one of our conditions to develop autonomy and confidence in self-management, enabling them to fully engage with their community and activities of their choosing. The service follows a pathway from hospital to community and can be delivered in a one-to-one and/or a group setting. The service will all depend on Scottish Government Covid guidelines. The service can be delivered to provide specified person-centred communication support for those with a communication difficulty and/or to support a specific physical or everyday task. To undertake your role you will be required to undertake membership of the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Adults) schemes in Scotland (PVG).

Retail Volunteer - Inverurie

Volunteer with us in our Inverurie shop and help make a real difference in your local community! Our volunteers are vital in helping run our shops and raising funds to help make sure people with chest, heart and stroke conditions get the support they need to live their lives to the full. This is an exciting role in our new Inverurie shop that would be suitable for someone looking to gain retail or customer service experience, or a friendly individual with a helpful disposition interested in making a contribution to their local community. One of our wonderful shop volunteers Anne shares why she loves volunteering in store, “I wanted to learn new skills as well as get to know more people locally, so volunteering in the shop was ideal.
