The public have a crucial role in shaping health and social care research. PPI contributors volunteer with Researchers at the University of St Andrews and NHS to discuss ongoing projects and shape the outcomes of the research across a wide range of topics, from Cancer based research, to Palliative Care, to Respiratory Conditions and more. A PPI contributors role is reviewing and commenting on written documents and meeting Researchers to discuss projects and provide ‘outside views' on how it is progressing, reviewing a project from start to finish, including grant applications.
You don’t need any scientific or medical background - support is available and they have a friendly panel eager to welcome new joiners. Most important is to have a keen and passionate interest in health and social care research.
The role is project-based, so commitment is not fixed. They are keen to hear from individuals from underrepresented communities.
Our new patient tutor programme at University of St Andrews School of Medicine is an innovative development which we hope will provide an invaluable learning experience for our medical students. Our intention is to encourage our students to understand more about patients’ experience of illness and healthcare by spending some time talking to volunteer patients.
