Today, our volunteers help us to look after this wonderful place and welcome visitors from around the world who come to admire our museum. As the number of visitors to our tearoom increases, we are looking for additional tearoom volunteers to work alongside our existing team of staff and volunteers to ensure our visitors receive great service at our shop and a high-quality food & beverage offering at our cafe.
We want our visitors see the tearoom as part of the experience at the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum as it is one of the main income streams that enables us to continue to maintain and care for this unique location in Alloway, Ayr.
What’s included in the role?
· Providing a warm welcome to visitors using the tearoom
· Taking orders and payments using EPOS system
· Serving hot / cold drinks and a range of scones / cakes
· Keeping the tearoom serving area and indoor / outdoor seating areas clean and tidy
· Greeting and serving customers at the shop
· Managing the till at the shop
· Ensuring all food safety rules are followed
· Replenishing the shelves when required
· Maintaining a safe environment for staff, volunteers and visitors at all times
Full training will be provided for all aspects of the role.
Who will I be working with?
Generally, you’ll be working with a team of other volunteers and Trust employees. If you need help while volunteering, your volunteer manager or another appointed person will also be around to assist.
Do I need any previous experience for this role?
In general, you don’t need any specific experience or qualifications to volunteer with us.
For this role, we’re looking for someone who is enthusiastic about the work of the Trust, passionate about its values and objectives, and happy to engage with people of all ages and backgrounds. You’ll be able to provide clear and helpful information to our visitors and ensure they all have a great experience.
We’ll provide an induction and training for you (all about the Trust, its values and your role) to get started, and we’ll help you keep learning while you’re volunteering with us. This includes free access to all of the courses in our online e-learning system.
Shop volunteer required to help us in our busy retail space in Dalry. Duties can include:
Till operation, customer service, stock processing, donation sorting, general cleaning and making the displays and shelves appealing inside and in the window.
Your creativity and enthusiasm will be essential!
We need you to help with making displays appealing, sorting a treasure trove of donations, separating the pulp from the bestsellers and identifying the must have items as well as displaying them all to maximum effect!
Do you have a knack for presentation, an eye for detail and enjoy making things look their best? We’re looking for people like you to volunteer in our F&E stores to help make them look as appealing and inspiring as possible. You can expect to be helping out with visual merchandising, making sure everything is displayed to its full potential; you will also be involved in creating eye catching displays in our homeware department ensuring the items are clean and labelled.
Do you always have a welcoming smile on your face and love getting in to conversations? Why not get to know the people from your community with this versatile volunteering role. You will be serving customers, helping to promote our stock and awareness campaigns and encouraging every donor to become part of our Gift Aid scheme.
Are you calm, collected and happy to chat on the phone? We’re always looking for friendly, confident and helpful people to join our team and become the voice of your local shop. You will be the first point of contact for our customers helping them with any enquiries and arranging collections for donations.
There’s a lot to do in our charity shops and something to suit most tastes and interests. For example you may enjoy helping people to choose something for a special occasion; have a good eye for selecting items to go on sale in the shop; or you may like to try your hand at window displays; perhaps you would like to price goods or prepare them for display or you may even be a dab hand with backroom shop work.
We have a variety of roles including, sorting donations, front of house operating the till, steaming garments, washing bric-a-brac, stocking shelves, window dressing, and assisting customers.
We have a variety of volunteers from all walks of life, and both male & female, it’s a great way to meet new people, socialise, make new friends, and get out of the house for a few hours.

Lead Volunteers are essential to the running of our shop. Be involved in the planning and running of the shop, such as risk assessments, fire escape routes, volunteer health and safety, team involvement, supporting in events and pop-up stalls, and the responsibility of the day to day running of the shop in the absence of the shop manager.

Our lead volunteers receive an enhanced level of training enabling them to take on additional levels of responsibility. This training is both in the store with colleagues, and via eLearning.
Your role as a Clan EVENTS VOLUNTEER is essential in helping to generate the funds needed for us to provide our vital support services to people affected by a cancer diagnosis in your local community. You could be asked to get involved in a variety of activities, whether it’s manning a cheering point on one of our runs, walks or cycles, helping to welcome guests at our annual lunch or ball, or providing information at one of our open days. Typical activities include:
• Helping to prepare for an event – this might involve preparing information and signage, setting up routes for runs/walks/cycles, sorting displays and activities, moving chairs and tables, putting up gazebos etc.
• Providing a warm and friendly welcome to all attendees of Clan events, answering any questions and encouraging people to get involved in the event/activity
• Assisting at larger scale events such as the Clan Ball or Clan Lunch – this might involve manning the car park, directing attendees to the right location, providing information, running stalls, assisting with activities, selling tickets or accepting donations
• Working together with Clan staff to ensure the best possible experience for our events attendees/participants and signposting where appropriate
• Helping to raise awareness of Clan services
Role Commitments
• Working on an ad-hoc basis at events for either a few hours, part of the day or a whole day as required (time commitment would be discussed in advance of an event) and on occasions be flexible and available to help at short notice
