Strathclyde 4×4 Response assists numerous organisations during times of difficult driving conditions from delivering meals on wheels to vulnerable people, and helping community nurses visit their patients.
We are the West of Scotland Team of the 4x4 Response Network. We provide experienced volunteer off road drivers to assist the emergency and public services in times of need. The severe winter conditions seen in 2009/2010 and again in 2010/2011 have seen many teams active.
Can YOU become a 4×4 Responder?
- Do you own or have regular access to a 4×4 Vehicle?
- Do you want to help your community in times of bad weather or other emergency?
- Are you prepared to undergo background checks for PVG (Protection of Vulnerable Groups) and NPPV (Non Police Personel Vetting)?
If the answer to all of the above is Yes, then we would love to hear from you.
As Responders, we are typically working alongside the Police and other Emergency Services, so the basic training and assessment has to be in place.
To become a Responder, we require you to achieve four key competencies.
Communications – hold a current Amateur Radio licence (minimum Foundation level)
Navigation – Able to pass a practical Navigation Assessment
Off Road Driving Assessment – Able to pass an assessment to demonstrate you understand how to control your vehicle in poor conditions
Exercise Participation – Take part in a practical exercise to demonstrate the competencies above.
As we cover the whole of Carrick (North and South) transport is a huge issue and cost for the club. Could you help us by driving SACT or Community minibuses?
This will allow us to offer transport links to rural areas and give young people in these areas the opportunity to participate in our fantastic sport and committed community club.
For this role full membership of the PVG scheme is mandatory but we can organise that free of charge. You will be fully supported by our club committee, volunteers and players.
The time commitment for coaching is generally approx. 5 hours per week including 1 weekday evening and either Saturday or Sunday mornings during term time, you will primarily be associated with one year group.
Contact us on carrickrugby@gmail.com please mark Volunteering in the subject line and have a look at our Facebook pages to see what our amazing volunteers support: @carrickrugby and @ Carrick Micro/minis
Please note: only drivers between the ages of 25 and 75 with two full years of driving experience and who have or are willing to complete MiDAS training within 12 months will be permitted to drive the minibuses. Over the age of 70, drivers must have completed a PCV medical in order to continue driving any minibus.
As the population of the 65+ community in Dundee increases so do the number of elderly people who are isolated and lonely. Help us to keep older people independent, safe and well in their own homes by being a volunteer driver, enabling older people to get to appointments, do their own shopping or enjoy meeting up with friends and family.
You will hold a full drivers licence and if you have access to a suitable and reliable car you must hold comprehensive insurance. You will be happy to collect our customers from their own home and drive them to their desired location. Where appropriate you may have to wait for a period of time before taking the passenger home.
Your responsibilities will include cash handling, light paperwork and you will be required to become a member of the PVG scheme. All costs associated with your role as a volunteer will be met by DCT.
DCT are keen to recruit drivers from anywhere in Dundee.

Opened in 2019, the Health and Wellbeing Centre at Dumfries House provides a range of holistic services to the local community. Services are GP and patient-led, with referrals from primary and secondary care providers. Run by The Prince’s Foundation, it provides an Integrated Health and Wellbeing Programme, with the centre also open to health charities and other organisations.
Currently, the organisation is running a range of health care programmes for the community free of charge, such as Chronic Pain, Obesity and Weight Management, and Mental health courses. These are open to anyone in Ayrshire. Although based at the wonderful Dumfries House Estate at the health and wellbeing centre, this might also be problematic to people who would like to join but do not have the means and ways to get to the estate since there is no public transport links. Volunteer drivers would support both us as a foundation but more importantly the participants.
Volunteer drivers transport people from their homes to Dumfries House and back to their residences, using their own vehicles. The volunteer drivers are reassured that the participants will be assessed that they are fit to get in and out of the vehicles on their own.
The different wellbeing programmes run in between 6 to 12 weeks with morning and/or afternoon sessions. Each session lasts for 3 hours and volunteer drivers can either opt to leave and return the estate or else enjoy a walk in the grounds and a complimentary tea or coffee.
Personal Qualities:

• Warmth, sensitivity and a willingness to listen.
• Patience and understanding.
• Enjoy interacting with people.
• Willingness to get involved.
• An understanding of the importance of a regular commitment.
