This project involves local people in the development of an accessible organic growing centre at Jupiter Urban Wildlife Centre, owned by Scottish Wildlife Trust. The aim of this programme is to involve local people, for whom access to nature is severely limited, in a regular programme of outdoor growing and conservation-based activity. We know that connection with nature enhances peoples’ lives through improving health, well-being and building community cohesion.
We provide supported volunteering opportunities for people of all ages and abilities in two-hour outdoor practical sessions every Wednesday and Thursday.
During summer months sessions are focused on our fruit and vegetable garden which provides a range of hands-on practical tasks from organically growing herbs, salad, vegetables and fruit. Learning how to compost, plant wildflowers and garden with wildlife in mind whilst helping with general garden maintenance. Outdoor cooking sessions are run at the end of each month.
The recycle woodshed compliments our garden and offers the opportunity through winter when growing season has ended to learn how to make a range of items out of recycled pallet wood currently donated by Whyte & Mackay. We have an accessible wood-working space where our service users can learn to build planters, raised beds, bug hotels, bird/bat boxes, stools and signs from reclaimed timber.
What are the benefits of getting involved?
Our aim is to promote and look after the natural resource at Jupiter and to actively facilitate interaction, enjoyment, learning and conservation of the amazing wildlife-rich habitat that Jupiter presents. We know that regular facilitated visits to Jupiter reduce stress levels and isolation, restore health and provide calmness and structure for people with disabilities. Being actively involved in environmental activity, learning new skills and meeting new people changes lives.
How much does it cost to come along?
All session places are free of charge and can be booked ahead in blocks.
What experience is required?
No experience is necessary as all training and guidance is provided and matched to the needs of participants. We provide gloves but request that participants wear appropriate seasonal clothing.
What do I need to bring?
Please feel free to bring snacks, we provide hot refreshments and will be sampling our own produce later in the year.
Is it safe?
All activities are risk assessed and a qualified first aider is present at every session.

We are committed to our community and want them involved in everything we do at Cycle Hub which is why we love volunteers! We have a variety of roles of varying lengths of commitment time. Whatever your background, identity or ability, there’s a volunteer spot with your name on it.
We have a list of volunteer roles you can choose from, but we are ultimately flexible around you and your available time commitment, experience, interests and goals. In the past, our volunteers have supported us at our events, in our shops and workshops, and with our Bikeability program in schools.
If you are interested in making a difference to future generations, help us teach pupils about riding bikes on today’s roads! Bikeability is a training program that teaches children to cycle safely, to learn how to deal with traffic and that, above all gets children excited about cycling. The program is supported by a network of volunteer instructors across Scotland.
You will work alongside John to deliver Bikeability sessions that not only allow participants to gain confidence on a bike, but also increase social skills and a sense of wellbeing.
And if you feel like stepping it up, then we can put you through SCQF-accredited Bikeability Training (1 day course) so you can become an instructor and deliver Bikeability as a trained volunteer alongside the Angus Cycle Hub. Don’t worry, you don’t need to be an expert to become an instructor!

Opportunities for individuals to be involved in coaching or leading various sports and activities through the Active Schools programme throughout East Lothian. Whether you are new to coaching or an experienced coach we can provide you opportunities to work with school aged children in a sporting environment with an opportunity to lead or assist with activities.
Active Schools East Lothian is a joint initiative between East Lothian Council and sportscotland. The programme was identified as a key element of the Scottish Executive's drive to get more people in Scotland active, a commitment outlined in the National Physical Activity Strategy.
The main aim of the Active Schools East Lothian is to offer school aged children the motivation and opportunities to adopt active, healthy lifestyles throughout their school years and into adulthood. They do this by supporting and sustaining a network of volunteers, coaches, leaders and teachers who in turn deliver extra curricular physical activity and sport before, during and after school and in the wider community. To help our volunteers we provide training opportunities through 'fit to coach'.
'More People, More Active, More Often'
The Active Schools team consists of 5 primary and 6 secondary coordinators. All primary and secondary schools in East Lothian have a coordinator assigned to their school. These coordinators are responsible for working in partnership with Schools, Sports Development and Local Clubs to increase the range of quality opportunities for pupils to become physically active.
Each primary coordinator is in charge of developing programmes for 5 to 7 schools in a cluster. There is a full-time secondary co-ordinator in each High School responsible for developing sport and physical activity. These co-ordinators develop extra-curricular programmes and assist with curricular delivery by offering alternative activities.
