As SISG, we currently have 14 hearing hubs in Ayr, Prestwick, Troon, Girvan, Alloway, Largs, Arran, West Kilbride, Saltcoats, Kilwinning, Cumnock, Kilmaurs, Galston and Kilmarnock. We also support 27 battery pick up points across North, South and East Ayrshire libraries. We also carry out visits to over 2,000 older people with hearing and/or sight loss throughout North, South and East Ayrshire each year. We wouldn't be able to carry out all this work without the help and support of our volunteers.
If you would like to volunteer with us, we currently need peer support group volunteers to offer support and information to people struggling with hearing and/or sight loss in informal settings. Our volunteers meet in cafes and restaurants in Irvine, Troon and/or Ayr to share a cup of coffee and a scone whilst supporting and share learning experiences.
Even as little as 2 hours a month make a difference to our service users and help us run our support services. If you have any queries, please get in contact and we will do our best to support you with your volunteering journey.
Full training will be given by professionals.

Volunteering Matters is a national volunteering charity. We bring people together, through the power of volunteering, to overcome some of society’s most complex issues. One of our most successful projects across the UK is RSVP - the Retired and Senior Volunteer Programme. People who have time on their hands, particularly those who are aged 50+, develop, organise and run a range of activities in their local communities.
In Stirlingshire and Clackmannanshire, RSVP runs a Handyperson Project which is led by volunteers. Our team help older people, or people with disabilities, with small and minor maintenance tasks. The tasks we complete for people are varied, normally taking less than 2 hours. Examples include unblocking sinks, putting up shelves, building flatpack furniture, changing lightbulbs, rewiring plugs, replacing smoke alarm batteries, and hanging mirrors, curtains, or blinds.
It can be challenging to find a tradesperson willing to do such minor tasks which can be difficult or even dangerous for some people to do these tasks themselves – particularly if they are older, frail, or have a disability. Our service is free although the service user pays for any supplies e.g. washers or lightbulbs etc. Donations are welcomed from those who access it.
Tasks included in the role
Contact clients to arrange a suitable time for the task
Carry out task
Record task completion using an on-line report form
Accept donations if offered, record and hand in so they can be banked.
Volunteers receive full support from the Handyperson team as well as travel expenses and health & safety equipment.
The days of the week and hours available are completely flexible and we will work around the volunteer and what spare time they have. If you are interested in volunteering, or you know someone who could do with some help around the house, then please contact us.

Spot the potential for further fundraising amongst the box holders for community fundraising.
Our Rehabilitation Team works with veterans all across Scotland, helping them adapt and learn to live with sight loss. They provide support and a listening ear on a wide range of topics, which can include:
- Helping veterans make their home a safer and easier place to live when their sight is changing
- Finding alternative ways of reading and accessing information, in formats that will work best for the veteran
- Advising a veteran on the benefits of registering as blind or partially sighted, and if appropriate, helping them through that process
In this volunteer role, you will be matched up with a veteran who has received initial advice and support from one of our qualified rehab staff members. You will be providing follow-up support, visiting the veteran for an hour or two a week over several weeks. You will be supporting veterans in their own homes and out in the community to retain independence and safety. This may involve travelling with the veteran on public transport.
What’s included in the role?
In this role, you will support veterans after they have received assessment and training from our qualified rehab workers. You will help veterans adjust to their sight loss by:
- Supporting them on a walk with their long cane, sighted guiding, building confidence walking outdoors, shopping, or other places of interest.
- Supporting them within their own home to use equipment supplied by Rehab Team, such as an electronic magnifier.
- Supporting them to prepare food safely and independently following Rehab assessment and training.
