What is a Fundraising volunteer?
As part of a local team, our fundraisers represent SSAFA at events, and in public. The role includes helping at fayres, street collections, concerts, quizzes, raffles, sporting events etc.
Why do we need you?
SSAFA branches rely on regular charitable income to fund all the necessities behind our support for clients. This includes volunteer travel expenses, phone bills, publicity and grants for clients in urgent need. A varied programme of fundraising also keeps the SSAFA profile high in the local community, so everyone knows who we are and how we can help.
Key role responsibilities
Being part of a team with collection/buckets tins at events, supermarkets, shopping centres, etc.
Acting as a marshal at a public event e.g. handing out water to runners, supervising parking etc.
Being part of a team running a stall at an event, Armed Forces Day, fayre, county show etc.
Helping with putting up posters, building gazebos, serving refreshments, packing/unpacking cars etc.
Being a positive ambassador for SSAFA, engaging people of all backgrounds and interests
Volunteering within the standards and values of SSAFA including observing our policies such as the Volunteering policy and data protection policy (these will be covered in your training and local induction.)
When would you be needed and where would you be based?
This role involves being out and about at public events and would suit someone looking to give the occasional day, half day or evening to support SSAFA; when and where would be flexible to suit you.

We have a few restrictions on who can act as a referee for you and your application:
The referee must have know you for at least two years - and you must still be in contact now.
The referee cannot be a member of your family.
The referee cannot live at the same address as you.

We are looking for someone to come along to our lunch club to serve lunch to our guests. Duties include setting the tables, collecting meals from the kitchen and serving them to the table, clearing the tables when the meal is finished, keeping the work surfaces clean and tidy. Whilst serving we expect people to have a chat with our guests, making sure that they have everything they need and are enjoying their meal, we hope that people will strike up a good relationship with our guests and are able to talk about many different topics.
We are looking for someone to come along to our lunch club to prepare nutritious food for our guests. Duties include preparation of ingredients, peeling potatoes, vegetables and meat, plating up meals once they are cooked and keeping the work surfaces clean and tidy, loading the dishwasher once the plates and cutlery have been returned to the kitchen area, leaving the kitchen in a good condition on finish.
Grandmentors is an award winning inter-generational mentoring programme, matching volunteer mentors (normally but not exclusively those aged 50+) who have a range of life skills and experiences, with young people aged 16-26 who are care experienced or who have "adverse childhood experiences". Grandmentors has now launched in Perth and Kinross in 2022 for the first time!
Our volunteer mentors help young people navigate the transition to independence into adulthood, by guiding them through life skills such as managing finances, accessing employment, education and training, and supporting their health and wellbeing.
This opportunity is for volunteers (normally aged 50+) who have life experience and skills to offer. However, if you are younger than 50 and feel you could offer valuable support, please do apply or contact us to discuss further.
It is important that you have good people skills, communication skills, patience, and can offer a regular commitment of a few hours per week (weekly or fortnightly). This role requires a PVG check which we will process for you after you apply to become a mentor.
We provide our volunteers with comprehensive induction training, all on-going support, volunteer expenses and lots of other great benefits including the chance to make a difference to a young adult in need.
Bressay parkrun will take place every Saturday morning at 9.30am (9am ferry over). It is an organised run, jog or walk which is free to participate in. Registration is online and participants print off their personalised barcode which is scanned at the finish line and results are emailed to the participant. Bressay parkrun therefore requires volunteers to undertake the following roles: marshalls, photographer, barcode scanner, volunteer coordinator, run director, time keeper, funnel manager, finish token provider, tail walker, support for new volunteers, data processor. This event promotes the health and wellbeing of our local community by encouraging social fitness. There may also be an opportunity for someone to start a junior parkrun once the Bressay parkrun is well established and successful. The event is ongoing and open to all ages, abilities, genders, races etc. We want to encourage everyone to take part in some way.
This is an opportunity to work as part of a team, learn new skills and make new friends. The role consists of working with three other volunteers to serve lunches at our R.V.S Lunch Club held at Islesburgh daily.
Islesburgh lunch club runs from Monday to Fridays and is open 12-1, Volunteers arrive in advance to set up tables and stay a short while after to clear away the tables.
Duties include:
Collecting orders / handling money / serving meals / setting up and clearing down tables / chatting with older people / offering dementia friendly support / reporting any concerns of an older persons welfare.
Our community transport service helps older people to get out and about when walking or public transport is not an option.
Main duties include escorting clients from their home to the car and providing transport for a variety of reasons. These can be taking the client to visit family or friends, go to a lunch club, shopping or to an appointment. A friendly helpful approach is all that is needed. This role is flexible and depends on your availability.
Everyone can feel lonely and isolated at times, especially if experiencing hardship.
In response to the effects of loneliness and isolation on peoples wellbeing (physical, emotional, social and mental health), that the COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated, TLC have responded to this need and further developed our befriending service to combat the loneliness and isolation felt by many in our city. Our service is provided to anyone aged 18 years and over in Aberdeen who is experiencing or at risk of loneliness or isolation. Your help as a volunteer would therefore make a real difference.
Our expertly trained and compassionate volunteers not only provide a lifeline to people, in the form of friendship, but also a helping hand to reconnect to the community, bringing joy and passion back into people’s lives.
