The aim of this project is to improve the experiences of families and carers, following the bereavement of a loved one in Hospital, with all in-patient areas using dignified and respectful bags/boxes to return patients valuables and belongings to families and carers.
Normal practice within the NHS is to return belongings following the death of a patient in plastic patient belongings bags; this includes very personal belongings such as watches, jewellery, cards, and photographs. The items are returned in a plastic bag which is universally used as a bag to store and return patients clothes. This has been seen for a long time as a practice which is impersonal and lacks respect and shows no recognition that the person has been bereaved. Recent feedback from staff and reflection from a student nurse on placement echoed the thoughts of how impersonal this felt and did not express the empathy the staff felt for families and carers.

Nonsuch History and Dance is an internationally recognised leader in the field of historical dance. As a professional performing arts company and educational charity founded in 1976, we have seen how historical dance brings communities together, promoting physical, mental, and social wellbeing among people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Our goal is to teach, train and entertain future generations in all aspects of historical dance. Our professional expertise ensures rigour, while our ethos is firmly rooted in inclusive arts for all. Nonsuch is anticipating a growth period and we want to take this opportunity to expand our Board by up to 5 new trustees including a new Treasurer. We are a UK cross-border charity registered in England, Wales and Scotland. We are particularly keen to expand our connections in Scotland. Since Board meetings are conducted via Zoom, there is no specific location requirement for Board members. We are open to applicants with no previous Board experience or background in the performing arts. However, we are especially interested in candidates with skills in any of the following areas: accounting; grant-writing/ fundraising; digital marketing; business development; event management. We warmly welcome and encourage applications from people currently under-represented on the Board including those under age 40; black/ethnic minority; disabled; LGBTQ+. The formal time commitment for trustees is 4 online Board meetings per year of which one coincides with an AGM. This will equate to approximately 25 hours per year which would include the meetings and any prep or follow-up work. Depending on the additional responsibilities for which individual trustees volunteer, there are also ‘working groups’ that meet online in between Board meetings. Our Treasurer oversees preparation of statutory accounts by an external accountant. The time commitment for the Treasurer is approximately 40 hours per year including meetings and financial duties. Closing date for applications is 6 February 2023.
Helping out in a BB group with children and young people can make all the difference to young lives – meaning happier young people, happier communities and a society that values the contribution that we can all make; young, old or in-between. We call our volunteers “leaders” because they guide a course for children and young people.
Many of our volunteers say they’ve learned things through their involvement with BB that have helped them to get new jobs or even change career. This would be ideal for someone undergoing Teacher Training. For example, as well as helping out in a local BB group, you might like to train as a Trainer and help run courses for other volunteers. Once you volunteer there’s a whole world of opportunities for you to participate in within our movement – locally, nationally or internationally.
For further information about the Boys’ Brigade within South Ayrshire, please contact – Stuart Hyslop, Ayr Battalion Secretary, Tel – 07709 715545 or email stuarthyslop@btinternet.com. Please also visit our website ayr.boys-brigade.org.uk or the Boys’ Brigade main website – boys-brigade.org.uk for any other assistance.
Research shows that the fact we volunteer and help others makes us happier! If you choose BB as the place to volunteer, that would make us very happy!
