St Giles' Cathedral is a site of significant spiritual, historical and architectural interest. Each year it attracts over 1,000,000 visitors, drawn from many nationalities, age groups and walks of life. Our volunteer guides are the first point of contact for most visitors and play a crucial role in ensuring the quality of their experience. Feedback from visitors suggests that each encounter with the guides has the potential to make someone's visit; 'I appreciated the warm and personal tour'.
We’re looking for friendly, sociable people to bring HMS Unicorn’s history to life for our visitors. We’re the oldest ship in Scotland so there’s lots of stories to tell about our past! You will be trained to give tours of HMS Unicorn to our visitors and answer their questions. You’ll develop an understanding of and enthusiasm for our historic ship combined with excellent customer service and communication skills.
Volunteers will be given relevant training and support by the Volunteering, Engagement and Learning Officer.
Giving tours will involve being able to move between decks using the ladderways (only ways of access) around the ship.
The key tasks will include:
• Learning about the history of HMS Unicorn.
• Working with members of the public – giving tours and answering questions in a helpful and friendly way.
• Supporting the Museum staff in acting as the main point of welcome for all visitors to HMS Unicorn.

We are looking for practical people who will help us to maintain the general upkeep of HMS Unicorn for our visitors now and in the future. This will be done through cleaning and other practical tasks on board the ship and on the dockside and approach to the ship. There will also be the opportunity to assist the Maintenance Officer with longer ongoing projects on board the ship.
You will develop an enthusiasm for our historic ship and knowledge of its layout and structure as well as practical skills in keeping it clean and presentable. Volunteers will be given relevant training and supported in these activities.
The key tasks will include:
• Sweeping the decks
• Weeding and maintaining the garden areas in the dockside
• Maintaining the windows and gun ports
• Cleaning out different areas of the ship
• Carrying out other practical tasks as directed by staff

The current Chairperson is planning to stand down in January 2023 and the Committee is looking to recruit her successor as soon as possible to allow for a handover period. The Chairperson manages a voluntary Committee of 10 friendly local people who are united by their love for the West Barns Village Hall. It is a beautiful, busy venue which provides the locals with facilities suitable for an array of different activities. The Hall is financially sustainable due to regular bookings, however, the Committee frequently applies for funding to seek further improvements and to offer new events and activities for the local people. The building has been recently refurbished and is in good condition. The Chairperson is expected to organise the Committee meetings (currently once every 4-6 weeks, prepare an agenda and chair the meetings. The role requires between 5-10 hours a month and is very flexible. Most activities can be carried out from home and good knowledge of digital communication is required. The role is satisfying and provides a great opportunity for somebody looking to hone their leadership skills and meet like-minded people.

The Scottish Traditional Boat Festival returns to Portsoy on 18 and 19 June 2022 and we are seeking volunteers to help out during the weekend. We always need help before, during and afterwards to set up facilities, as well as stewards to ensure safety across the locations. In return for your help, you will receive free entry to the Festival.
