Want to help our oceans but don’t know where to start?
Ghost Fishing UK is appealing for help in Shetland between the 6th and 11th of August 2023.
If you are on Shetland during these dates and would like to help turn lost fishing gear into a recycled product, read on…
We are looking for volunteers to roll their sleeves up and come and help us in the evenings at Lerwick harbour quayside.
Any lost fishing gear we find needs to be sorted, pressure washed and bagged, ready for transport to the mainland for recycling.
Any creel pots we find will be cleaned and sorted, awaiting collection from fishermen who want them.
We expect the vessel MV Valhalla to return to the harbour at approximately 5 pm each day, where we will need some assistance unloading, cleaning, and sorting any gear found.
Updates on our progress will be daily via our social media channels.
You’ll need your wellies, old or waterproof clothes and gloves if you have some (we can provide if you need them). We will provide all cutting and pressure-washing equipment.
Don’t forget to join us on Thursday evening, 10th August, (adults only) for an evening social and progress update and a Q&A session with the team.
We look forward to seeing you there!

Midlothian Scouts currently do not have a District Secretary and we need one! We need your help to volunteer
to become an Executive member. Do you have good administration skills? Would you prefer to support more
‘behind the scenes’? Can you help keep our records in order?
You will play a key role by leading the administrative work for Midlothian Scouts. No previous secretarial
experience is needed, we just need someone who is good at admin and keeping records. This is an exciting central
which could take about 2 hours or so per month only!
This is your chance to be extraordinary and help in a flexible way! Joining our committee is not as posh as it
sounds but we do like to have fun.
· Minimal commitment – only a couple of hours a month
· Flexible volunteering to fit around you – your skills/interests/time
· Alongside like-minded people – we're easy to get on with
· Great fun - it sounds formal, but it isn't!
· Make a difference – get that ‘feel good factor’
The Secretary will support the Chair of the Executive Committee to ensure the smooth functioning and sound administration of the Scout Group for instance. · Provide administrative support to the running of the Executive Committee. · Work with the Chair of the Executive Committee to set meeting agendas and arrange meeting logistics for the Executive Committee. · Communicating with the Executive Committee and relevant Scout Council. · Preparing the appropriate administration for the Annual General Meeting, including collating the Annual. · Report and Accounts for the Annual General Meeting. · And more Though ‘Executive’ sounds a bit formal, it is not like that at all! We are a relaxed group of like-minded individuals! This role is ideal for those who do not necessarily wish to work directly with young people but would like to help to support and develop Scouting a couple of hours or so a month.
Training Advisers (TA) provide adult Scouts training support to help our young people be the best they can be. You
can join Scouts as a TA with no Scouting experience. Yes, we couldn’t deliver Scouting without our TAs!
No previous Scouts experience, no problem! This is a non-uniformed volunteering role. And if you aren’t an
existing training provider please don’t worry – it’s the passion, interest and relatable skills which count.
Trainers are key to the volunteer training scheme at the Scouts. Training Advisers (TA) have an essential job in
providing support to those undertaking training for their appointment in Scouting. The key role of a TA is to
support a learner through The Scouts’ Adult Training Scheme. Our excellent South East Scotland Scouts TA
team provide our volunteers with superb assistance, the tools and tips to feel trained, supported and happy in
your role.
As a TA you will help adults navigate through the training process. You'll start by identifying the training needs for
the person concerned and agreeing a Personal Learning Plan (PLP), planning how these needs can be met, validate
training and possibly presenting some key modules as part of your learning or skills presentations. You will work with a wider experienced Training Team to support our learners. The ultimate goal is to help our adult leaders secure their 'Wood Badge' which you'd play a pivotal role as this will mean they can deliver the best scouting experience for our young people today and tomorrow. Our training is award-winning and you have the chance to be part of this amazing experience - learning and growing as you go. We are looking for new faces to join our expanding training team in line with our recovery post covid and ongoing growth
This vacancy is to provide exciting indoor and outdoor activities for girls and boys aged 6-8 years old.
Scouts is both a young persons and adults experience – making friends, trying something new, doing something good for both your community and yourself and importantly making memories. It’s adventurous and rewarding. This Scouting adventure is only possible thanks to our superstar volunteers - ordinary people, like YOU, making an extraordinary difference to young people’s lives.
The Assistant Beaver Leader role is one of the most popular choices as you can help with whatever the group is doing.
To provide the best Scouting experience and continuity for our young people in Penicuik we need volunteers, in particular a Thursday Assistant Beaver Leader.
Do you enjoy interacting with young people? Are you a team player with a positive, can-do attitude? Do you enjoy fun activities – from athletics to astronomy form photography to pioneering? Do you want to do more? Then this is right up your street.
What can you do?
You can play a pivotal role. Without a Beaver Colony, there would be nobody to feed new members into our Cub pack either. The existing Beavers may not be able to fully embrace the Beaver Scouts opportunity.
Despite the challenges of the pandemic, demand for Scouting remains strong but we can only continue (and grow) with your help. This is your chance to make a difference and use your personal skills to help young people gain theirs as a Scout Maker. And volunteering goes both ways – you can benefit too.
Like this sound of this?
Beavers is packed full of amazing activities to engage and challenge Beaver Scouts of all abilities. From camps, water activities, nature walks, cooking, crafts, sport and so on. This is only possible thanks to our team of adult volunteers. We help volunteers get the most out of their experiences at Scouts by providing opportunities and support as part of team of like-minded individuals. Our approach focuses on what you want to get out of volunteering with Scouts, while respecting how much time you can offer. As Scouts is a well-known ‘brand’, this experience also looks great on any CV adding further employability skills.
