Get involved with Garden Club
In 2021 Hospitalfield’s Walled Garden, designed by the horticulturalist Nigel Dunnett, opened to the public. The scheme was developed to reveal the unique horticultural history of the site at Hospitalfield, which has been tended as a garden for over 800 years.
The garden and grounds at Hospitalfield are maintained, made fruitful and more beautiful with the fantastic support of our volunteers who meet regularly at Garden Club. Garden Club support the development of the garden from helping weed the gardens, sowing seeds, potting up plants and assisting with seasonal projects. Our next garden project is the development of the medicinal garden.
The site at Hospitalfield has been populated since the 13th century when the monks who ran Arbroath Abbey established their hotel or hospital, here where we believe that they must have grown a medicinal garden and brewed potions as medicines to improve the health and wellbeing of those who they cared for.
From January 2023 we are inviting a medicinal plant specialist to design the garden with Garden Club volunteers, Hospitalfield’s grounds keeping team and soon to be appointed Community Gardener. The new medicinal garden will be planted in a large area within the walled garden at Hospitalfield. As part of our upcoming Garden Club sessions we’ll be planning, preparing, and planting this new medicinal garden.
Garden Club Volunteers meet regularly from 10am to 12pm on Fridays at Hospitalfield. We’re looking for volunteers to come along and get involved in the new medicinal garden at Hospitalfield.

Our volunteer cinema helpers support us in setting up the venue (the Carrick Centre, Maybole), meeting and greeting visitors, collecting tickets, etc.
If required, they may be asked to introduce the film and help out with the distribution and sale of refreshments.
We are seeking individuals to help with running face-face communication sessions for babies, children and young people with Ds. We are also recruiting volunteers to assist with online delivery and resource making.
East Dunbartonshire Health & Social Care Partnership
The SOUNDS OF THE GALLERY BAND is a group of young people with a range of Additional Needs, including physical disability, Learning Disability and autism. Over the past five years they have worked together to create and play their own songs and music. The band has performed at the Bearsden Festival and the Big Helix Picnic Festival in Falkirk. The group requires an enthusiastic person to help set up and maintain their equipment (including electric guitars, keyboards, drums and vocals), and assist the group members to rehearse and perform safely and effectively.
Wee County Veterans was set up as a charity in 2022. Originally run by Duncan Paterson, the former chair. Their office in Sauchie, Clackmannanshire called Duncans Den, has been set up for Former armed forces personnel and their families who are encouraged to head in when the shutters are up, with the kettle always at the ready for a cuppa and volunteers on hand to provide support on a wide variety of issues. Come in and socialise with other veterans, tell your stories. They can also hopefully resolve any problems or signpost you to other groups such as SSAFA or ASAP where they will get the help or information you need.
Wee County Veterans are looking for a veteran, good at arithmetic to help with their accounts. No experience in accountancy required, training will be given on a basic excel spreadsheet. Flexible working, 2 -4 hours a week
Volunteer must be a Veteran (but does not need to have accountancy experience, just basic arithmetic).
St Giles’ at Six concerts are at 6pm every Sunday, and are free to enter, with a collection at the end for anyone who wishes to donate. As a Concert Steward, you would be responsible for several duties, including welcoming the audience and showing them to seats, assisting with the Test and Protect system, and helping with general queries on the night. It’s a great opportunity to do some volunteering in Edinburgh’s historic High Kirk, whilst experiencing music from performers across the globe.
Supporting a local charity board in the role of Treasurer. Developing the strategy of the Charity and defining the path for sustainability and development of the organisation along with the Board, Trust manager, and the Staff Leadership Team. Within this, the Treasurer particularly considers financial evidence and analysis. Supporting the Finance officer with the annual budgeting process and in reviewing management accounts presented to the boards bi-monthly meetings.
Following a four-year refurbishment, David Livingstone Birthplace has opened our brand-new museum exhibition, shop, and café in July 2021. This is an exciting time to join us as we welcome visitors into the new museum for the 2022 season.
We are looking for enthusiastic Visitor Experience Volunteers to join our Visitor Experience team. This is a vital role in supporting the museum and interacting with the public as the face of the David Livingstone Birthplace. The Visitor Experience Volunteers will greet visitors and engage with them in a friendly and informative manner to ensure that they have an enjoyable experience.
We are particularly looking for Visitor Experience Volunteers that are excited about greeting visitors and selling tickets at the Welcome Desk. This is an important task as you will be the first point of contact for all visitors at the beginning of their journey around the museum. Full training will be given for Welcome Desk duties and volunteers will work closely with staff.
Nitten Canaries is a brand new community singing group that meets in Newtongrange to sing for fun and enjoyment. Currently we have 6-7 members. We are expecting this to grow.
Whilst we are starting small, we are a happy, friendly group and greatly enjoy meeting to sing. At the moment the group does not intend to perform in public, but may be open to this further into the future.
The group name, 'Nitten Canaries', is reflective on Newtongrange Village's mining heritage and the shortform name by which the village is locally known. We would love to have a Musical Director who can help our group grow in confidence and ability and to have fun through singing.
Your role as Musical Director will be to direct the singers be open to the group's song choices and advise on what is manageable
Role involves being in the Youth Project between 6.30 and 10pm to assist the workers with between 20 and 60 youngsters dropping in on any evening. We are open Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday
Any skills that the volunteers have can be brought to play. (we have hair and beauty evenings, have taught some knitting and crafts or it may be music) but that element is not necessary. There is nothing compulsory in the Attic and the buzz comes from interaction, chat and activities chosen by the youngsters themselves.
