Description

VTO provides free one to one tuition to children and young people (aged 8-18) to help tackle the attainment gap in Scotland. We work with young people from diverse backgrounds including those from low income families, care experience, EAL, or those faced with perceived barriers to learning. Our volunteers are responsible for developing a person-centred tutoring experience online. A key part of this role is relationship building, mentoring, instilling confidence, and empowering young people through education. Volunteers from a range of diverse backgrounds and experiences are welcome.

What will I be doing?

Working one to one with a young person who requires tutoring support online.
Relationship building and mentoring
Instilling a growth mind set towards learning
Monitoring and recording progress of learning and keeping in contact with your assigned Learning Communities Coordinator.
Tutoring in English, Maths and potentially other subjects, dependant on experience.
Sourcing and creating engaging ways to support pupils’ skills and learning.

What skills and experience will I develop through this role?

We want to support our volunteers through their time with us.
Satisfaction of giving something back and reducing the attainment gap.
Gain teaching, tutoring and youth work experience useful in careers working with young people.
Developing new enhanced communication skills.
Enhanced personal statement/ CV.
Fulfil volunteering requirement of Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme/ Saltire award scheme if eligible.
Reference after 6 months.

You will be asked to fill out an application form, be invited for an interview and as part of the selection process we require a check to be carried out through the Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme for working with children. This involves a criminal record check which includes spent and pending convictions. This is the fullest form of criminal check available to us. VTO will assist with the processing of this and there is no cost to you.

Organisation aims and objectives

VTO provide children who need it the most with free educational support, helping to build confidence and bridge the attainment gap. We do this through several initiatives including one-to-one tuition and homework groups.

Frequency and commitment details

Usually, 1 hour per week time commitment for tutoring with some additional time for learning material preparation. We work with tutors to find a time each week that works for you and the young person who is being tutored. We ask that tutors are reliable with their timekeeping and let us know in advance if they are unable to attend a tutoring session.

Restrictions

Experience required: You don't need any formal teaching or mentoring qualifications to become a tutor. The main requisite is good literacy and numeracy skills and you must be fluent in English. Capability, creativity, and enthusiasm to communicate and work with children and young people. Good relationship building skills Ability to support young people with a lack of confidence/ motivation. Ability to be non-judgemental, empathetic, and supportive.
Travel details: No travel required. This opportunity is entirely online. To tutor online, you will need access to a PC, Laptop, iPad or tablet with a microphone and camera, and access to Google Chrome. A stable internet connection is also needed.

Every day of your life matters – from the first to the last. That's why the right care at the end of your life is so important. With other group members from your local area, you will organise fundraising events, collections and bring your community together in supporting Marie Curie. The group meets approximately every 6 weeks to organise 2-4 events per year. Due to Covid-19 at present all volunteer fundraising is being carried out virtually.

WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP The Community of Dumfries and Galloway - Marie Curie, health professionals, patients and families - together have identified a need to offer a service to support patients and their families at the end of life. Volunteers spending time with patients alone or with their families and friends, providing emotional support, a listening ear, short breaks for friends and family, help with signposting for information and support, and to simply be there for people at this very difficult time makes a huge impact and will help us to ensure a better end of life for all. WHAT YOU WILL DO This list is not exhaustive, but all tasks will be within the boundaries of the role of Community Companion Provide one-to-one companionship through active listening, conversation, activities, or hobbies. Support patients nearing the end of life and their loved ones. Give family and carers a break by spending time with their loved one. Signpost to relevant services and resources. Help evaluate the service by writing brief visit reports. Keep staff updated on significant changes or events regarding the patient. Attend scheduled support and development sessions. Conduct planned visits in various settings, such as a home, ward, care home or within the community. Assist with practical tasks like making tea, finding out information, or taking short trips. Represent the service positively to all users. WHAT WE OFFER Opportunities to build or develop skills in a charity environment with induction, training, and ongoing support. Connection with staff, volunteers, patients, and families. Reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses, including mileage, per Marie Curie policy. Marie Curie is here for anyone with an illness they're likely to die from, and those close to them. Everyone deserves the right support at the end of life. To help us offer this support, we are looking for volunteers to raise vital funds for Marie Curie and to spread the word about our work. Alongside other group members, our fundraising team organises collections, fundraising events and encourages support for Marie Curie in the local community. Our fundraising groups also act as ambassadors, sharing the message about the work of Marie Curie and supporting local people, clubs and organisations to fundraise too. The role includes, but is not restricted to, the following tasks: -Helping organise collections, events and other fundraising activities. -Helping promote the work of the charity and encourage support from the local community. -Regularly attending group meetings in Larbert.
