Description

Dunfermline Advocacy is a small local charity working in West Fife since 1992. They bring together local volunteers with vulnerable people, providing long and short-term support, understanding, and friendship to those who need it - they call this Citizen Advocacy.

Dunfermline Advocacy has a small staff team who support 70+ volunteers every year meaning that the charity is able to support over 150 vulnerable adults across West Fife. They support people with physical and learning disabilities, mental health issues, long-term or chronic health conditions, autism and dementia aged 16 and over.

They are looking for board members to support the direction and governance of the charity. Board members will attend meetings, make decisions on the direction of the charity, ensure good governance and act as ambassadors.

They are seeking applications from people with expertise in the areas of HR, legal, and IT.

Organisation aims and objectives

We create citizen Advocacy Partnerships by matching responsible local citizens with people who are vulnerable in some way. We aim for these partnerships to be long-term, but also we provide crisis advocates in cases of urgent need. Through our work we aim to help build a fairer community. Where people with a learning disability, physical disability or mental health issue are able to speak out and have their voice heard.

Restrictions

Experience required: Dunfermline Advocacy are looking for people who have a commitment to social justice, inclusion and personal choice. Experience in charity governance, HR IT and legal issues/charity law would be beneficial. Basic IT skills are required as a minimum (MS Teams/Office 365) and a more in depth knowledge of IT issues for small organisations would be a great asset.
Travel details: The preference is for in-person meetings in the Dunfermline Advocacy office, but Board members are also able to attend meetings remotely by Teams if required.

Expenses details: Trustees can claim mileage at 45p per mile or public transport costs for travel to Board meetings.

Citizen Advocate

Citizen Advocates are ordinary people who are interested in safeguarding the rights of vulnerable adults in the community. Citizen Advocacy matches local volunteers with vulnerable adults in the community to provide invaluable support and friendship, giving each individual a chance to have their voice heard, to know their rights, and to be empowered to make informed choices about their lives. Volunteer Advocates spend time getting to know their Partner and understanding what issues are important to them. They provide support to help make decisions, allow their Partner to put forward their own views, and most importantly, are a friendly face and companion. Dunfermline Advocacy matches volunteers with partners based on interests, personality, location etc. Whether it’s a blether over coffee, a game of pool, or a walk in the park, volunteers and their partners choose the activities they do together.

Volunteer Befriender
  • KASP (Kingdom Abuse Survivors Project)
Kingdom Abuse Survivors Project (KASP) is currently recruiting Befrienders to support adults in Fife who are affected by childhood sexual trauma. As a Befriender, you’ll provide a vital connection, reducing loneliness and helping individuals build confidence, improve client’s well-being, and support in accessing local services. You’ll also help individuals reconnect with their community. They’re looking for volunteers who are empathetic, non-judgmental, and can commit to at least 1 hour per week. In return, you’ll receive training in child and adult protection and trauma informed practices, ongoing support and supervision, and reimbursement for any expenses incurred during your time with clients.
