L’Arche Highland is a community for people with and without learning disabilities. We work to support individuals to achieve their fullest potential in a vibrant, caring environment based on principles of mutual relationship, shared life, and spirituality. Members with learning disabilities are known as ‘core members’ because they are at the heart of everything we do. Our community is made up for four residential houses in Inverness, four busy and fun-filled workshops (gardening, woodwork, candle-making and life skills), and our beautiful grounds and gardens.

Core members are supported to achieve greater independence while also taking part in a thriving community life, whether through regular gatherings, celebrations, or participation in the wider community.

What we’re looking for:

We are looking for volunteers from all walks of life to fulfil a variety of roles within our residential houses and workshops. You don’t need any special skills, or experience of working with learning disabilities – just to be caring, good at building relationships and willing to learn. Your role could involve:

• Befriending individuals
• Assisting in our woodwork, candles or life skills workshops
• Helping out with community events and gatherings
• Gardening
• Creative work such as art, music, or drama
• Sharing a particular skill or talent
• Driving
• …and much more.

As a volunteer with L’Arche, you will be celebrated as someone with a vital contribution to our community life. We will work with you to find a role that suits your unique talents, skills and interests. We will support you to develop lasting and meaningful connections within our community, whether with core members, fellow volunteers, or assistants.

Organisation aims and objectives

L’Arche establishes and manages facilities where people with learning disabilities and assistants share life together. In Edinburgh there are 2 community homes. They now have 3 community homes and a cluster of flats where individuals have their own tenancy.

Help Us Fundraise at Scotmid Stores

We’ve been invited to take part in a special opportunity with Scotmid/Semi-Chem stores, who are supporting Alzheimer Scotland as their Charity of the Year. This means we can have a presence in local stores to help raise awareness and fundraise for people living with dementia – and we’d love your help!   What’s Involved: Stores are open 7 days a week from 6am/7am until 10pm, so you can choose dates and times that suit you. You can help by collecting donations and chatting to shoppers to raise awareness. You can volunteer for just one or two hours, or longer if you wish – it’s completely flexible. We’ll provide t-shirts, and you won’t need to handle any money – the Scotmid store team will take care of counting donations after your session. When: Opportunities are available anytime from now through until August 2026. This is a lovely way to get involved, and fundraise for a cause close to many of us. Intergenerational Community Connector

Join Generations Working Together (GWT) as we work towards a Scotland where generations are more connected. If you would like to get involved in intergenerational work, learn more about the practice, and help strengthen community connections, this could be the perfect volunteer role for you! As an Intergenerational Community Connector, you’ll get the chance to: • Help one of our development team members plan and run 2–3 local network meetings each year. • Spread the word about the benefits of intergenerational work within your community. • Share and promote GWT events, meetings, publications, and training opportunities. • Connect with local groups and encourage them to showcase their intergenerational projects through the network and GWT.

Visitor Experience Volunteer

Following a four-year refurbishment, David Livingstone Birthplace has opened our brand-new museum exhibition, shop, and café in July 2021. This is an exciting time to join us as we welcome visitors into the new museum for the 2022 season. We are looking for enthusiastic Visitor Experience Volunteers to join our Visitor Experience team. This is a vital role in supporting the museum and interacting with the public as the face of the David Livingstone Birthplace. The Visitor Experience Volunteers will greet visitors and engage with them in a friendly and informative manner to ensure that they have an enjoyable experience. We are particularly looking for Visitor Experience Volunteers that are excited about greeting visitors and selling tickets at the Welcome Desk. This is an important task as you will be the first point of contact for all visitors at the beginning of their journey around the museum. Full training will be given for Welcome Desk duties and volunteers will work closely with staff.
