Police Scotland Youth Volunteers (PSYV) promotes a practical way for young people to understand policing by supporting the Police in their local area through volunteering. As part of this, young people are given a chance for their voice to be heard and are encouraged to promote good citizenship.

The Police Scotland Youth Volunteers Programme gives young people an insight into policing in Scotland and inspires them to participate positively in their communities. PSYV in Scotland aim to:

Promote a practical understanding of policing amongst all young people;
Encourage the spirit of adventure and good citizenship;
Support local policing priorities through volunteering;
Give young people a chance to be heard; and
Inspire young people to participate positively in their communities.

Volunteers have actively supported policing in Scotland for over 100 years by joining the service as Special Constables. The PSYV programme gives young people of all backgrounds a positive means of engagement with the police service.

Through regular training and participation in community safety initiatives, youth and adult volunteers are given opportunities to overcome barriers and discover their talents whilst making a positive contribution to their communities.

PSYV is heavily reliant on the goodwill of Adult Volunteers who give up their time to support their local PSYV group and assist with the supervision of the Youth Volunteers at both local sessions and volunteering events.

As an Adult Volunteer you be expected to dedicate a minimum of three hours per month for volunteering events and attend training forums.

Each Adult Volunteer will be required to join the Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme (PVG). This process will be managed by the PSYV programme.

Organisation aims and objectives

Promote positive interaction between the police and young people; develop community citizenship in our volunteers; develop key lifeskills in our volunteers; and support our communities through volunteering. Assisting the Group Coordinator with all aspects of the running of the PSYV Fraserburgh Group for young people aged 13 - 18 years old. PSYV is a national organisation delivered by Police Scotland and supported by Young Scot and YouthLink Scotland.

Support

Expenses details: Travel to include bus, train, taxi or car (car mileage will be paid at the HMRC travel rate). Volunteer subsistence which covers the cost of food and beverages if adult volunteers have to travel as part of their role (subsistence will be paid in line with HMRC rate Other expenses (need to be agreed in advance with the Group Coordinator in writing)

Help Us Fundraise at Scotmid Stores

We’ve been invited to take part in a special opportunity with Scotmid/Semi-Chem stores, who are supporting Alzheimer Scotland as their Charity of the Year. This means we can have a presence in local stores to help raise awareness and fundraise for people living with dementia – and we’d love your help!   What’s Involved: Stores are open 7 days a week from 6am/7am until 10pm, so you can choose dates and times that suit you. You can help by collecting donations and chatting to shoppers to raise awareness. You can volunteer for just one or two hours, or longer if you wish – it’s completely flexible. We’ll provide t-shirts, and you won’t need to handle any money – the Scotmid store team will take care of counting donations after your session. Youth Volunteer

What do we do? Weekly meeting promoting teamwork, learning and wellbeing; volunteering opportunities in their communities to gain their Saltire Awards and counts towards the volunteering element of the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Previous activities and events have included: charity events; police open days; leaflet drops; crime reduction initiatives; large-scale events such as the Tall Ships Races and the Edinburgh Tattoo; local authority run events and lots more!
